Dear Neighbor,
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my campaign to become a member of the Midway City Council! I'm running for city council because I love Midway and want to help keep it the special and unique community it is.
I was born in the farming community of Tremonton, Utah and spent many summers working (and playing!) on my grandparents’ farm. My wife, Laurie, and I grew up in Ogden, Utah. School and career took us to Chicago and Denver. We were able to move back to Utah in 2015 to be closer to our four children and grandchildren and feel very fortunate that we have been able to make Midway our home and gathering place for family since then.
I am currently serving as chairman of the Midway Planning Commission and have been serving on the Planning Commission for over six years. I have also spent 30 years in business management in the corporate world. I will combine my knowledge of the issues facing Midway and my management experience to bring a thoughtful, professional approach to address the challenges and opportunities our community faces. I would be grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve our wonderful community as a member of the City Council and would appreciate your vote. Reach out to me if you would like to chat about my views or your concerns about the future of our community. My contact information is below.
If you elect me to the city council, you will be getting a person who is a problem solver, asks a lot of questions, listens to all sides of an issue before making a decision, but above all, will work to preserve what makes Midway so special. Serving on the Midway City Planning Commission for the past six + years and working on the city's latest General Plan have made me very familiar with the issues facing Midway.
In addition to my service to Midway, I spent 30 years in the financial services industry after earning an MBA from the University of Chicago. I focused in the areas of corporate finance, corporate planning, and investment management. My career experience includes completing several multi-million financing transactions for corporate clients, building and running an investment advisory business for a large bank, and designing and managing a technology platform used by financial advisors to manage over $60 billion in client assets. I will apply the same disciplined work ethic, rigorous analysis, and problem solving skills I used in the corporate world as I serve on the City Council.
I feel very fortunate to live in our beautiful city and have tried to show that gratitude by looking for opportunities to give back to our community. One of the primary reasons I am running for City Council is because I believe it's the best way that I can continue to serve our community.
I am currently serving as the Chairman of the Planning Commission and have been a member of the Planning Commission since 2018. During my service on the Planning Commission, we have implemented changes to zoning laws to reduce density, increase setbacks, require more open space in developments, and have made other changes to support our residents' desire to maintain the rural feel of our community. I also served on the Open Space, Historic Preservation, and Affordable Housing committees for the city's recently updated general plan.
My wife and I have tutored children at Midway Elementary School through a weekly after-school program to help improve reading skills. I have also served as a Cub Scout leader.
I have volunteered for several years in various food booths at Swiss Days. The Caramel Apple booth has been my favorite so far!
I am currently serving as a board member and treasurer of my home owner's association in the community of Valais.
As a member of the Midway City Council, I hope to continue serving the community and focusing on issues that are important to our residents. I'm not running for City Council because I have a single issue I'm focusing on. I take a holistic view of our city and I am prepared to tackle all issues that may arise. However, there are a few things that are important to me and, I believe, are important to the citizens of Midway. These are:
Several things make Midway a special place, including its location nestled against the mountains, the charm of Main Street with its shops, restaurants and historic buildings, and the love that our residents have for our town and the sense of community that brings. My efforts on the city council will always be guided by a desire to keep Midway special.
I applaud the Mayor's and City Council's efforts to protect open space through using funds from the open space bond to purchase conservation easements or development rights on several prime parcels. We should all be ecstatic that the money raised through the bond was leveraged approximately 7:1 by attracting other government and private funds to make our bond money go much further. I would support investigating another bond issue to continue preserving open space in Midway.
As do many residents, I enjoy riding my bike throughout Midway and appreciate the trails that have been added. The city has a plan to add many more trails and I support completing our trail system as quickly as financially feasible. I also would work to make sure the trails are maintained properly so they continue to be safe and enjoyable.
Midway isn't just the small agricultural community that it has been for generations. The secret is out and Midway's beauty and charm have attracted people from near and far to move here or purchase second homes. I believe we must all work together to maintain Midway's heritage and sense of community while responsibly addressing the inevitable growth that comes when people see what Midway has to offer and want to move here.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my interest in serving on the City Council. I would appreciate your vote!
I would love to hear what your concerns are for Midway or answer any questions you have for me. Please send me an email or give me a call.
